Commemorative euro coins
Coins issued by the member countries of the European Union can be distinguished as follows:
- coins for regular circulation, featuring a common face and different national faces, one for each country;
- collector coins, usually with a face value higher than 2 euros, minted in precious metals such as gold and silver. They are not intended for regular circulation but are only found in packaging designed for numismatic collecting;
- 2 euro commemorative coins.
2 euro commemorative coins are intended for regular circulation and have been minted since 2004 by the member countries of the European Monetary Union to commemorate specific events or occasions. The first commemorative 2 euro coin, in fact, was minted in Greece to celebrate the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Commemorative 2 euro coins maintain the same common face as regular 2 euro coins but adopt a particular national face.
