Catalog of Maltese coins in euro
Maltese euro coins replaced on January 1, 2008 the Maltese lira (MTL) with an exchange rate of 1 euro = 0.429300 MTL, when it entered the European Monetary Union, after it was part of the European Union since May 2004.
To select the images for the national sides of the euro of Malta was held a public competition for Maltese citizens. The designs selected were:
- 1 cent, 2 cents and 5 cents of euro: the temple of Mnajdra, prehistoric megalithic complex on the southern coast of the island of Malta dating back to the third millennium BC and UNESCO World Heritage;
- 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 euro cents: coat of arms of the Republic of Malta;
- 1 euro and 2 euro: the cross of Malta, eight-pointed cross also known as the Cross of St. John. It was the symbol of Amalfi at the time of the Maritime Republics, and was chosen as a symbol of the monastic-chivalric order of the Knights Hospitallers, founded in Jerusalem by merchants from Amalfi and Salerno at the time of the First Crusade (1095). Based in the monastery of St. John, took refuge in Malta after the defeat of the Christians, and founded the Order of Malta.
Minting of Maltese euro coins has been assigned to the French Mint (La Monnaie de Paris).
