Catalog of Vatican coins in euro
The State of Vatican City is not a member state of the European Union, but was allowed to use the euro as from 1 January 2002 because of links with the Italian State, as already done for the Principality of Monaco and the Republic of San Marino. The euro has replaced the Vatican lira (VAL) at the conversion rate of 1 euro = 1936.27 VAL.
The eight euro coins have unique design as the effigy of the Pope:
- 2002 – 2005: John Paul II;
- 2006 – 2013: Benedict XVI;
- 2014 – present: Francis
The coins are minted in Italy by the mint of Rome.
